Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new standalone Passwords app that aims to simplify for users to sign on to websites and software.
A new report fromBloombergs Mark Gurman, who cited people who asked to remain anonymous, stated the new homegrown app called Passwords will generate passwords and keep track of them.
It will generate and store passwords similar to popular third-party password manager apps such as 1Password, LastPass, and Proton Pass, which offer password management functionalities.
The new Passwords password manager app is expected to a part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, the next major upcoming versions of its iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, respectively.
It is expected to be unveiled at Apples Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will commence on June 10.
Further, the new dedicated Passwords app will be powered by Apples iCloud Keychain, Apples password management system for macOS and iOS.
For those unaware, Apples iCloud Keychain is an encrypted container that securely stores account names and passwords for Mac, apps, servers, and websites and confidential information, such as credit card numbers or bank account PIN numbers.
However, it can only be accessed via the parameters app or when a user attempts to log into an account.
The app features a list of user logins and splits details into different categories, such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks and Passkeys, an Apple-promoted password replacement that relies on Face ID and Touch ID.
Like most password managers, the data can be auto-filled into websites and apps when a user goes to enter, Gurman wrote.
According to the report, one of the standout features of Apples standalone password manager is its cross-platform support, which means it will work on its Vision Pro headset and Windows PCs.
Users will also have the option to import passwords from rival password apps to the Passwords app to make the transition easier.
As of now, no information is available about whether the new password app will be available on Android devices.
In addition to the Passwords app, Apple is expected to reveal iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 operating systems on June 10, which will reportedly feature brand new AI (artificial intelligence) features.
