Hughes turned himself in to the Cobb County Sheriffs Office on Monday.
Kennesaw State police began an investigation in May after receiving reports of the hacking.
He reportedly changed fellow students grades from an F to A and another from a C to A.
For himself, he upgraded his B to an A, police said.
The professor alerted school officials who then told police.
The grades were immediately corrected to the original posting.
In addition to changing grades, Hughes allegedly stole data from the university.
